Lobster
Lobster
Overview
Lobsters are marine crustaceans (order Decapoda) with a hard exoskeleton. In common usage, "lobster" often refers to clawed lobsters (family Nephropidae) such as the American lobster, though the term can also be used more broadly for other lobster-like groups (e.g., spiny lobsters).
Molting (growth)
Like other crustaceans, lobsters grow by molting: they shed the old exoskeleton and form a new one. The new shell is initially soft and then hardens.
Habitat and ecology
Many lobster species are bottom-dwelling (benthic), living in shelters on the seafloor and feeding opportunistically on a range of prey and carrion.
Humans and fisheries
Some lobster species (notably the American lobster) support major commercial fisheries. Management and sustainability practices vary by region and species.
